Detroit's Most Wanted (D.M.W.) is an American hip-hop group from Detroit, Michigan, widely recognized for pioneering the city's hardcore hip-hop sound during the late 1980s and early 1990s. While they achieved national success, in the 1990,s with ground breaking videos while craking the billboards top 100 charts. DMW earned a dedicated cult following and holds a significant place in the history of rap'
DMW was signed in 1989 by Bryant Records who was one of the first independent hip hop record labels to have their own distribution around the world.
Formation and Early Years
The group was formed in 1986 by the core trio:
Motsi Ski (born Reginald Abrams, grandson of R&B singer Jackie Wilson)
MC Lee (born Robert Lee Jr.)
DJ Dunkin Hines
Motsi Ski and MC Lee met at Cooley High School, and the trio eventually set aside their initial rivalry to form the group, originally called "Def Drive" before settling on Detroit's Most Wanted. Their music was characterized as a Detroit-style take on the emerging gangsta rap phenomenon, focusing on themes of violence, drugs, and street life, often set to West Coast-style beats.
Peak Success and Key Albums
DMW first gained local attention with their single Save My Words For Wax at that point CEO of Bryant records Joel Bryant signed the group to the Bryant record label and they dropped their debut album, Tricks of the Trades (1990), on Bryant Records. The album was a National bestseller, peaking at No. 82 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
Their next album Tricks of the Trade, Vol. II: The Money is Made dropped on April 6, 1992. the single the money is made became a #1 video and DMW quickly beame one of the hottest acts in the country
Chart Success: This album peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
the video was the first rap videos ever shot in a casino (The Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey)
With their succes Duncan and Lee left the group to form a new group with MC Hammer and Duncan help produce his next album.
The group continued to release material throughout the early-to-mid 90s, including Many Faces of Death, Vol. III (1993), Bow The F--- Down (1994) and Ghetto Drama (1997).
The decade of the 2000s, has brought them international success and maybe a world tour might be coming soon.
