Same-Sex Marriage: The Legal Status and Ongoing Debate Across Different States

As same-sex marriage continues to be a hotly debated and divisive topic in the national political arena, it's imperative to prepare for the worst-case scenario. According to Jeremy Moss, the first openly gay state senator in Michigan, the fight for marriage equality is far from over. In his article for The Detroit Free Press titled "Gay Marriage Isn't Safe in Michigan," Moss calls for a ballot initiative to safeguard same-sex marriage after House Republican Representative Josh Schriver's attempts to revoke this fundamental right. Despite the Supreme Court granting the national right to same-sex marriage in 2015 and a 2021 Gallup poll showing majority acceptance, protecting this freedom is crucial. With the looming possibility of Michigan repealing the legality of same-sex marriage, it's necessary to take swift action and stand up for equality. No one is suggesting that reconsideration of the decision in Obergefell is imminent. Still, the number of state measures proposed signals an effort to shift the perception of same-sex marriage as an established civil right, leaders on both sides of the issue say.
